OTE PRESENTS A INTERCONNECTION NETWORK AT THE PREFECTURE OF KOZANI

Within the modernization framework of the Public Administration Sector and aiming to better serve both citizens and local services, the General Secretariat of Western Macedonia, the Prefecture of Kozani and the Local Union of Municipalities assigned OTE of Western Macedonia to carry out an innovative project. It concerns the construction of both a data and a full interconnection network at all buildings and services of the region. The network connects 16 municipalities and 3 smaller communities of the prefecture (with the capability to connect others too) to all the buildings and services of the Prefecture of Kozani throughout the region. Moreover, it connects the General Secretariat of Western Macedonia with all its buildings and in the future with other public services located at the Prefecture.A Web & Mail Server plus e-mail are already installed. The available software comprises a ?Citizen's Guide for the Prefecture of Kozani? (a co-operation between OTE and a local IT company) as well the data bank of the Ministry of Internal Affairs & Public Administration. The Control & Management Centre is already in operation and the staff is being thoroughly trained. The project is estimated to be completed by the end of 2000 and the budget arises up to 300 million drachmas.OTE's goal is to cover the needs of the Prefecture of Kozani for effective and secured information transfer. Applications in use include the ?Citizen's Guide for the Prefecture of Kozani?, electronic filing and soon more added value services such as teleconference, teleworking, telemedicine, tele-education.The ?Citizen's Guide for the Prefecture of Kozani? is already in use at the central building of the Prefecture and under pilot operation at 3 other Municipalities. Through this Guide, Prefectures will be able to offer citizens information concerning all transactions with public services, without obliging them to move. Moreover, citizens can access the guide through the Internet from their office or home. This co-operation proves that it is feasible to accomplish, within prefecture limits, a small-scale project analogue to ?SIZEYXIS?, already realized by the Ministry of Internal Affairs & Public Administration. The interconnection of these two projects may well represent the model for the development of IT networks for the Greek Public Sector.
