The Greek General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT), within the context of the Operational Program "Competitiveness" of the Third Community Support Framework, approved a new research project coordinated by INFORM LYKOS on the subject "Multi-application Campus Card". The project participants also include the Telecommunications Laboratory of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the National Technical University of Athens and SETEC, a Finish company that is an international leader in the markets of smart cards and security printing. The project's total budget is 366.958 Euros.

The project's purpose is the development of a new technology system with high value added, as well as the plan of its exploitation. The system will provide the integration and operation of multiple applications in the University environment. The use of smart cards will enable students to access all applications in a fast and easy manner. The application set includes student identification, access to secretariat databases, interactive secretariat functionality (e.g. registration), access to network (e.g. Internet), physical access in University area, e-purse, etc.

The system will lead to the modernization of university operations, increase security, assist the normalization of university resources and equipment usage, integrate and automate several processes and eventually improve the conditions of student education.

"The project will explore the operational performance and maturity of smart card technology (contact and contactless), in combination with the relative support equipment such as readers, information systems and wireless interfaces" stated Andreas Tirakis, Lykos Group IT Director, "and implement a combination of security technology on a smart card platform".
