TERNA ENERGY: Issuance of Approval Decision of the Environmental Terms for Project of “INTEGRATED WASTE MANAGEMENT OF THE REGION OF PELOPONNESE UNDER PPP”»
An important step regarding the implementation of the innovative project under the name «INTEGRATED WASTE MANAGEMENT OF THE REGION OF PELOPONNESE UNDER PPP» took place today, with the issuance of the Approval Decision of the Environmental Terms from the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change (YPEKA).
TERNA ENERGY was declared the Provisional Private Partner for the project on August 12, 2013. Following the issuance of the above decision, the signing of the Partnership Contract with thePeloponnesePrefecture is expected until August 2014 whereas the commencement of the project's construction is expected one month later.
The project «INTEGRATED WASTE MANAGEMENT OF THE REGION OF PELOPONNESE UNDER PPP» will provide a long-term solution to a huge environmental, social and economic problem which the Peloponnese Prefecture is faced with, while it will be the first project of this kind undertaken and implemented in Greece.
TERNA ENERGY will implement a significant part of the already approved Waste Management Regional Plan of the Peloponnese Prefecture, undertaking the responsibility of the Design, Construction and Operation of three modern Waste Processing Units and of an equal number of sanitary Landfill Sites for the process residue in Messinia, Arcadia and Lakonia, as well as of two Waste Transfer Stations in Korinthia and Argolida, which will permanently resolve the problem of waste management in Peloponnese for a period of at least 25 years in an environmentally, technologically, economically and socially acceptable manner.
Specifically through the implementation of the project:
- The problem of waste management in the Peloponnese Prefecture is once and for all resolved, implementing cutting edge technology.
- The environment is fully protected and upgraded.
- The citizens' quality of life is improved and the public health is protected
- Funds of EUR 160 million are utilized mobilizing the resources of the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF or ESPA), and private funds (including the Private Partner's own capital and private bank loans).
- New jobs will be created; 600 during the construction period, 200 as permanent jobs in the 25-year period of the project's operation, as well as a large number of related jobs (such as in the areas of transportation, trade, recycling, etc.)
- The economic burden of the area's citizens with regard to the waste management fees is minimized
- The project generates obvious benefits to the local economies, the tourism industry, the agricultural sector, the environmental education and raises the environmental awareness of the new generation of citizens.
- Source Separation Programs, Recycling Composting are all maximized.
- Green energy is generated, enough to cover the needs of the three Waste Processing Units.
The duration of the project's construction has been set at 24 months whereas from the 10th month following the signing of the agreement, TERNA ENERGY will set in operation the intermediate waste management facilities, which will provide a fully complied solution to the current environmental problem the Prefecture faces.
