Press Release - New Integrated Urban Transport project for INTRASOFT International
Luxembourg, September 8, 2015 – The “Modern Transport Union” consortium that includes INTRASOFT International Bulgaria Ltd. has been selected by the Municipality of Varna in Bulgaria to implement the Integrated Urban Transport project, having a key role in the government's effort for sustainable and integrated urban development.
The overall objective of the project is focused on increasing the quality of life in the city of Varna, through investments in sustainable Urban Transport, divided into ten components (lots) in total. For INTRASOFT International, the scope of the project includes planning, development, construction works, architectural supervision, component deliverables and installation on the first 4 components, i.e. an integrated ticketing system (component 1), the advantage of vehicles of Mass Urban Public Transport at intersections via Automatic Vehicle Location systems (component 2), a real-time passengers' system information (component 3) and the upgrade of the Urban Transport Control Center (component 4).
The total budget for the four components is 7.4 million EUR, while INTRASOFT International's Bulgaria participation is 3.9 million EUR. The consortium also includes Ballistic Cell, Bonima and Ericsson. The project has a 2.5-year maximum duration.
The city of Varna is the largest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, the second largest in Bulgaria and the eleventh largest city in the Balkans. With a growing economy and an important tourist sector, the city aims at reducing the number of polluting vehicles, its dependence on imported oil, as well as utilizing unused electricity generated in the country.
Mr. Alexandros Manos, CEO of INTRASOFT International commented: “We are very proud to be able to contribute to such an important government initiative for sustainable and integrated urban development in Bulgaria. This latest award is the second for such a system to be implemented by INTRASOFT International in Southeast Europe, adding to the telematics system for the Athens Urban Transport Organisation in Greece that is currently under development. This project enhances our position in the telematics and e-transports domain in Southeast Europe, clearly justifying our corporate strategy to expand our Group's portfolio in priority areas of the public sector.”

About the Varna Urban Transport project:
The city of Varna embarked on this modern and sustainable transport system project that aims at making the city greener, leading to the use of alternative means of transport like trolleybus, tram, and other types of public transport, while also including the construction of cycling lanes. The project successfully aims at addressing the growing necessity for fast, effective, accessible and convenient urban transport through the construction of a bus rapid transit (BRT) line connecting the most distant densely populated areas with the administrative centre. The project also involves the introduction of an integrated ticketing system following the needs of different social groups and the overall improvement of accessibility for disadvantaged groups. While there is significant emphasis on public transport as outlined above as well as upgrading bus terminals and depot, other clean modes of transport are also included. The city is also implementing a cycling strategy which will include the creation of new cycling paths, parking facilities, a cycling campaign and a bike rental scheme.
