Creation of a New FTSE/ATHEX Index



Following the ongoing effort the Athens Exchange is doing, in order to strengthen the visibility of its listed companies the creation of a new FTSE/ATHEX index is implemented. The new index utilizes an assessing mechanism for the participation in it of companies not belonging to the composition of the current FTSE /ATHEX Large Cap & FTSE /ATHEX Mid Cap Indices and have strong fundamentals.

Athens Exchange, in cooperation with FTSE, created the new index, aiming to:

  • Introduce a new trend in the Greek market regarding index creation, using a methodology different to the current one i.e. that of market capitalization weighted indices based solely on market capitalization selection criteria.
  • Improve focus of the investment community in companies with prominent profiles.

Stocks' selection will be based on a number of fundamental ratios, which are commonly used when performing corporate evaluation. The index will be free float market capitalization weighted where individual stocks will be capped at 20% of the index weight. The starting price is set to 1,000 points and the calculation will begin on Monday October 29, 2012.
